Brian M. Hughes is the County Executive for Mercer County and a former member of the county's Board of Chosen Freeholders. He was elected in November 2003, becoming the first Democrat to hold the post of the highest elected official in the county in 24 years. Accessed April 30, 2013.〕 He is a scion of the once powerful Hughes-Murphy political legacy. His father was two-term New Jersey Governor and Supreme Court Chief Justice Richard J. Hughes. His brother, John Hughes, is the longest serving federal magistrate. His half-brother, Michael Murphy, is an influential lobbyist, former County Prosecutor and candidate for Governor. His sister-in-law is a Superior Court judge. Hughes previously served as Deputy Executive Director of the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. In 1997, he had been elected to the Board of Chosen Freeholders and served two terms, including one as Freeholder President.
